Jackman hopes Akinfenwa not booed

Danny Jackman Jackman is in his second spell with Gillingham

Gillingham midfielder Danny Jackman says that he hopes fans will show respect to Adebayo Akinfenwa when he returns to Priestfield on Saturday.

The imposing forward scored 11 goals for the Gills last season before returning to Northampton Town in the summer.

Jackman was team-mates with 29-year-old striker at Northampton before they met again at Gillingham.

And he told BBC Radio Kent: "I think if we give him a hard time, knowing him as long as I have, it will drive him on to do better.

"So I'd quite like it if he had a nice reception because he's told me before that if he gets booed or jeered it spurs him on."

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler echoed his players sentiments and said he had become good friends with the ex-Swansea man.

"We respect Bayo. He's a gentleman. I loved working with him last year and I'm sure he'll get a good reception," said Hessenthaler.

Gillingham - who have lost their last two games - host a Northampton side who have had a tough time so far this season and Hessenthaler stressed the importance of the result over any sentiments.

"We speak, but come three o'clock we won't speak until after because it's a war for me," he added.

"We need to win the game and friends don't come into it."
